Integrated environmental protection plays a key role in the international Responsible Care principles and has been applied at Bayer for many years. One major aspect is the development of environmentally compatible products and production processes. Baypure® DS100 (polyaspartic acid, PASP) and Baypure® CX100 (iminodisuccinate, IDS) are two good examples of this. Their environmental performance has recently been underscored: independent bodies have awarded major environmental prizes to products based on

In June 2001 the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the United States awarded Bayer the Presidential Green Chemistry Award for Baypure® CX100. This prestigious prize was established by former U.S. President Bill Clinton in 1995 to support industrial environmental protection. It is awarded annually in five categories to companies and organizations in recognition of special endeavors in the fields of research, development and implementation of environment-friendly chemical technology.

In the spring, the “Groen Linie Maskinvask Color/Ultra” detergent marketed by the Danish supermarket chain Dansk Supermarked became the first detergent to be awarded the EU’s environmental flower ecolabel. This laundry detergent is based, among other products, on Baypure® DS100 and Baypure® CX100 raw materials from Bayer. So far, it is the only detergent that meets the stringent criteria for the EU environmental award. The EU flower has been awarded since 1992 to particularly environment-friendly consumer products.

In June 2002 the Federation of German Industry (BDI) awarded LANXESS an environment prize. The jury, which was made up of leading personalities in their fields, was conferred on Bayer for the development of Baypure® CX100, the environmentally friendly alternative to conventional complexing agents. Because of its good biodegradability, Baypure® CX100 reduces environmental impact on surface waters and in this is superior to standard products. This was the seventh time that the BDI has awarded an environment prize to companies which have made particularly important contributions to environmental protection.
Baypure® DS100 is a new dispersing agent for use in a wide range of applications, for example to soften water in washing machines and dishwashers and to improve the dispersion of pigment particles in the production of paper, decorator’s paints and other products. It has clear advantages over conventional dispersing agents in terms of performance and biodegradability.
Baypure® CX100 is a medium-strength complexing agent with low remobilization of heavy metals. It is superior to conventional complexing agents because of its excellent ability to complex iron, copper and calcium ions and its very good biodegradability. Its main applications are in detergents and cleaning agents, the production of paper and textiles, the photographic industry and agriculture.
